Leaders from Egypt, Ethiopia and Sudan have signed an agreement designed to assuage Egyptian worries over the construction of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, Egyptian Streets reported Dec. 29. Egypt previously expressed concern over the dam’s storage capacity and its effect on Egyptian water security and energy production by Egypt’s Aswan High Dam. The new agreement, based on a preliminary deal the countries reached in March, stipulates that a French consulting firm will conduct research into the environmental impacts of the dam. Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt are all reliant on the water of the Nile, but as upstream nations, Ethiopia and Sudan have a distinct geopolitical advantage.
