Opposition in the US to nuclear energy has climbed sharply, with a majority opposed to its use for the first time since Gallup began annual polling on the subject 22 years ago, the company said Friday. Gallup said 54% of respondents in the national poll said they were somewhat opposed or strongly opposed to nuclear energy, the first time since 2001 that more people opposed the energy source than favored it. The number saying they somewhat or strongly supported nuclear energy, 44%, was the lowest since polling began in 1994, it said. The polling company said the results suggest that low energy prices and a “perceived abundance of energy sources” are affecting attitudes towards nuclear power, trumping safety concerns.
