Nigeria: President To Return After Time Abroad For Treatment

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari will return to Nigeria on March 10, according to an official statement by the president’s office, Reuters reported. Buhari has been out of the country in the United Kingdom since Jan. 19, remaining in London longer than the originally planned 10 days. There is no official information as to why he remained overseas so long for treatment. There have been numerous questions in the Nigerian political scene about Buhari’s health. If he does not return, Nigeria’s political balance would be undermined. A political compromise between the country’s stark regional divides switches the presidency between leaders from different regions. Buhari is from the north but his Vice President Yemi Osinbajo is from the south. As Buhari continues to lean on his trusted circle of northern political allies, public frustration over the north’s perceived domination of Nigeria’s political system is growing .
