The self-proclaimed Islamic State’s (IS) longstanding hold over Hawija, west of Kirkuk, is posing an ongoing security threat to the Bai Hassan oil field. IS militants in Hawija have been responsible for several recent attempts to bomb the field, which produces 175,000 barrel per day (bpd), according to security and oil industry officials in the greater Kirkuk area.
