Renault-Nissan Alliance to Produce Electric Vehicle in China

Nissan Motor Co. NSANY -0.10% and alliance partner Renault SA RNO -2.00% are teaming up with Chinese auto maker Dongfeng Motor Group Co. DNFGY -3.62% to make a battery-powered automobile in the world’s biggest car market, where electric-vehicle sales are expected to rise. The joint venture, unveiled Tuesday, plans to produce a small sport-utility vehicle at Dongfeng’s plant in Shiyan in 2019, the Renault-Nissan alliance said. The vehicle will be based on an SUV platform developed by the alliance, it said. Global car makers have been searching for local partners for EV production in China, whose government intends to require auto companies to devote a certain percentage of production to battery-powered vehicles.
