Tesla stunned attendees at what was billed as an unveiling of its move into haulage trucking by revealing a revamped Roadster, which founder Elon Musk said would be the “fastest production car ever made, period”. As the first car to go from 0-60mph (0-96kph) in under two seconds, the new Tesla Roadster will have a range of almost 1,000km when it goes into production in 2020, the group said. “The point of this is just to give a hardcore smackdown to gasoline cars,” Mr Musk said. “Driving a gasoline sports car is going to feel like a steam engine with a side of quiche.” Tesla’s new sports car is a throwback to its first vehicle, the Lotus-designed Roadster. The supercar zoomed out of a trailer that had been towed by the new articulated lorry that Mr Musk had revealed minutes earlier. With its prototype electric truck on Thursday night, Mr Musk, Tesla’s founder and chief executive, had already opened a new front in the war on the internal combustion engine. The heavy haulage vehicle will have a range of 800km when it goes into production towards the end of 2019, said Mr Musk, and will be “impossible” to jackknife.
