Major oil and gas companies need to embrace the “unstoppable” electrification of society and take practical steps to limit the use of carbon-intensive fuels if they are to retain their right to do business, former BP chief executive John Browne said Wednesday. Browne, who after leaving BP in 2007 moved into private equity and is now executive chairman of Russian-owned L1 Energy, was asked to comment on moves by cities such as New York to sue oil companies for their role in climate change, as pressure over the issue rises. On Tuesday current BP CEO Bob Dudley stoked controversy when he hit out at campaigners urging universities such as Cambridge and others in the US to divest from fossil fuels, telling them to “come to their senses” and noting that BP provided funding to Cambridge.
