Investment in new wind farms in Europe last year fell 19% on the year to Eur22.3 billion ($27.5 billion), according to an annual report by wind lobby group WindEurope. Total wind investment including refinancing and acquisition of projects amounted to over Eur51 billion, the report published this week said, with wind energy accounting for half of all power sector investments in 2017. The lower investment still covered more capacity with 11.5 GW financed in 2017 compared to 10.3 GW in 2016, reflecting the falling cost of wind energy. “It’s delivering more capacity for less money. This is largely due to increased competition in auctions and technology advances that are driving cost reductions in the supply chain,” said WindEurope chief policy officer Pierre Tardieu.
