The Iraqi government on Thursday attempted to quell five days of protests outside vital Basra oil fields with promises of jobs, electricity, and clean water. One protestor was killed on Sunday outside of West Qurna 1, after which the demonstrations metastasized to the gates of West Qurna 2 and Rumaila. Oil production remained unaffected at the time of publication, however, and operators ExxonMobil, Lukoil, and BP remained in control of the respective fields, according to Oil Ministry and Basra Oil Company (BOC) officials and a senior oil security official.
