Russia’s Nord Stream 2 gas link project company has withdrawn its 2017 request for a route through Danish territorial waters in an attempt to speed up the permitting process. The move means the Danish Energy Agency, which is responsible for granting the permit for the 55 Bcm/year link to Germany, must now focus on the two requests for routes through Denmark’s exclusive economic zone. The DEA has to assess these under international rules, which focus on environmental and shipping safety impacts. The first route, through Danish territorial waters, required input from Denmark’s foreign ministry under a Danish law adopted after Nord Stream 2 requested the route. “Both Nord Stream 2 and our investors need legal certainty and protection of legitimate expectations, which means a transparent and predictable decision-making process,” Nord Stream 2 CEO Matthias Warnig said late Friday.
