BASF oil and gas subsidiary Wintershall defended its partnership with Russia in the Nord Stream 2 pipeline to bring Russian gas to Europe, saying this was a more stable option than liquefied natural gas (LNG). Board member Thilo Wieland, attending the World Gas Conference in Washington, D.C., said Europe’s geography and dwindling domestic gas resources meant that pipeline links were superior, both economically and ecologically, to LNG that the United States is seeking to export. “Once completed, Nord Stream 2 will play a key role in Europe’s energy supply, in contrast to LNG, which is lured away by money at a moment’s notice, but which does not guarantee volumes long-term and reliably for Europe,” he said as part of the company’s statements during the conference.
