After several unmet deadlines for ending gas flaring, oil and gas firms still continue to waste natural gas resources in the country as the 2020 deadline nears, ’FEMI ASU writes A significant amount of natural gas produced in the country is still being wasted despite many deadlines set by the government to end it. Nigeria has Africa’s largest gas reserves of more than 190 trillion cubic feet but shortages of the commodity has continued to persist in the country over the years. The government has said that gas flaring, the burning of gas that is the byproduct of oil production, costs it roughly $1bn a year in lost revenue.
